Late in 2011 I decided to initiate a book club for our faculty at Seymour Community High School. Inspired by Kelly Gallagher, a professional educator from California who builds deeper readers and writers, my vision is to read one book a month, starting in January 2012, and meet the last Thursday of every month from 3:30 – 4:15 in my classroom for a discussion about the ‘book of the month.’
The ‘rules’ of our ‘book club’ are simple: meet once a month, the discussions are informal, there will be no attempt to elevate the discussion to the level of a Harvard grad seminar, and we will not limit ourselves to one particular genre or one particular topic (i.e., professional development).
I LOVE to read and usually it is the last thing on my list to do. However, if I might have to prepare to talk about a book I am reading with my colleagues/friends, I believe this gives me the opportunity to make time to read.
I hope this might spark an interest with you.
